Parabens should be prohibited
If you look at most skin care products on the market today, you will see that most of them contain parabens. What are parabens you may ask? Parabens are a chemical substance that are used to inhibit bacteria growth in personal care products. Parabens also extend the shelf life of personal care products as well. You might say well that doesn’t seem like a bad thing, I don’t want bacteria taking over my lotions and creams. You might also say, “I also don’t mind my products lasting longer, so what is the problem with parabens if they have these properties?”
The problem with parabens is that they mimic estrogen and interfere with estrogen that is naturally in the body. Due to the fact that they mimic estrogen as well as interfere with estrogen, it increases the risk of cancer. This is especially true for women, as parabens have been found to increase the risk of breast cancer. When examining cancerous breast tissue one or more types of parabens where found in 99 percent of the tissues. Parabens affect men as well, as they have been found to affect testosterone production. Parabens also adversely affect the functions of the male reproductive system.
Parabens mostly find their way into the body via topical application such as personal care products and cosmetics. Your favorite perfumes and colognes can also contain parabens. So while that scent may be lovely, it is wreaking havoc on your body. Parabens are so intrusive, to the point where they bypass the filtering organ known as your liver and right into your body. Parabens also love fat, which means that this type of chemical stores itself and builds up inside of fatty tissues in the body. This can make it hard for parabens to become fully eradicated from the body. Overtime, the parabens can therefore cause long term health issues.
So how can you avoid parabens in your personal care and cosmetics? One way is be sure to thoroughly read all personal care and cosmetic products. If any of the following ingredients are listed, or have the word paraben in it, sadly it’s a paraben:
- - Methylparaben
- - Propylparaben
- - Isobutlyparaben
- - Ethylparaben
- - Butylparaben
Keep in mind that not all personal care and cosmetic products are required to list all of the ingredients on their labels. This can be a health risk for many consumers, especially those that are at an increased risk for cancer and other issues. It is wise to choose personal care items and cosmetics that are made from all natural ingredients. You can still enjoy beautifying and good smelling personal care products that are made to last long without harmful parabens. Choosing and using products from honest companies that label their products also helps one to avoid parabens as well. The more consumers start to avoid products that contain parabens, the healthier everyone will be. Voicing concerns to personal product companies over parabens will also make a difference.
